Usability is undoubtedly one of the most critical product properties. The typical user no more wants to read lengthy manuals telling how the engineer has thought things should work. If the product does not behave as the user expects, or if the user does not know how to operate the product at all, is it the user or the engineer to blame? Are your products easy enough to use without a manual?
Usability must be built in from the earliest phases of design. To guarantee ease of use, the engineer should know the user's way of thinking and working. Usability should be tested using prototypes in different phases of the implementation process. And not only that, usability improvements may still be needed after the product is in everyday use, why not automatize the collecting of information on how the product really is used...
